what makes art, art?

answers1: My definition of art is "anything in a frame" - such as Andy
Warhol putting a Campbell's soup can in a frame. When someone does
that, it invites the viewer to look at an everyday object in a new and
abstract way - like a cylinder with red, white and gold designs.
Theoretically, anything that is presented out of its environment for
public consideration can be considered art. That doesn't make it good
art, just a basic artistic statement. <br>

Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There's lots of things I
think are "bad" art that I don't get at all, yet they get displayed in
galleries and museums. <br>

When a work of art is termed "great" it's because most people admire
it plus it gets critical acclaim - like the Mona Lisa.

The artist is the person who recognizes these moments of profound
significance in the progress of life, and presents them to us in a way

not as elevated as that of the artist. <br>

The artist might paint a picture of a mother and children strolling
through a marketplace in Europe in the 1800s with the correct cues of
light, color, posture, etc. etc. etc. that brings to the forefront of
our mind the totality of the concept of a mother caring for and
leading and enjoying her children. <br>

While we may say these things, the artist can demonstrate them with
compelling imagery. <br>
<br>
Even the decorative flower is art, because in all things there is the
principle of life and functional meaning and therefore, although the
painter may not have a full grasp of the nature and being of the
flower, the artistic significance is implicit in the flower, and so it
still resonates with the viewer in terms of beauty vitality, delicacy,
etc. etc. etc. <br>

Art again, is a form that has in it the meaning of life.

human markings.

answers6: Another vote for intent. The dividing line (art/not art) is
context. The quality of being art is not something that resides
within the actual work.

I have been asking myself the same thing. Did you see that Rocketboom
recently where people in NY were exhibiting their art and one woman
had a bunch of dryer lint in a picture frame and another woman had a
collection of rubber bands on the cardboard core of a paper towel roll
as a sculpture she was selling for $1000? <br>

Who am I to doubt my abilities as an artist if THAT'S all I have to
compete with? I never let myself consider being an artist as an
occupation until 3 years ago when I came down w/ cancer. Now I can't
think of anything I'd rather do or anything that would be more
valuable for my family than my artwork.

object.And it also depends upon his mood of the person looking at the

But as you ask as an art ,one thing might be precious to you ,may not
be the same with all other viewers , one thinks it's disgusting and
other thinks it's marvellous. <br>

For an art maker it's good to get comments from most of the
persons, so that he can deliver wonderful things to the world. <br>
Even though no one can satisfy all the people, he can try to maximise
it to the number of people.
