authors salary?

answers1:If an author hits it big, there's big money. But how many
great authors are out there? My parents were authors. My mom once
received her royalties in postage stamps (less than a dollar's
worth).Luckily, my dad came up with a type of book no one in education
had come out with yet. After that, they got great royalty checks. If
you want a salary for writing, go into journalism....Show more
answers2:I agree with Obi_San - especially about the last part. Being
an author is not about making money, but about entertaining people
with your books. You shouldn't just want to be an author to become
wealthy because it's not as easy to make money when your career choice
is an author.Like Obi_San said - it really depends on how many people
buy your book. So if your book is a bestseller - you get a lot of
money, but if it's not, then, well, I suggest a side job. =)Good luck
and please don't write a book just for money. That's not what it's
about and I guarantee that your books won't sell if you just write for
money....Show more
answers3:There is no "salary" for authors because they are not
employed by anyone. Books are sold for royalties. Authors may
recieve an advance against those royalties, however the average author
doesn't make more than a few thousand dollars on that (and it could be
only a few hundred, or even none, depending on what press makes an
offer and how marketable they think your book is). Most authors have
to work a day job. Only a tiny percentange of published authors have
a large enough body of royalty-making work out there to be able to
live on it.Hopefully you are not asking because this is a career path
that you want to pursue to become wealthy. For every Philip Roth out
there, thousands of talented and struggling authors working are
another job and writing. Write because you have a passion for it, not
for the money!...Show more
answers4:Might as well close this question and choose Elissa's answer
as the best one. Not going to get any better than that!
answers5:Salary? Ha ha! Good one. There's no such thing. Authors get
advances against sales and royalties. And there's no set average
because it varies from author to author, depending upon so many
factors like how prolific they are, whether their books become
bestsellers, if they have foreign printings of their books,
etc.Writing is one of the few professions that has no set salary and
pay is quite often far lower per hours worked....Show more
