Mikel Bethay: I have the same question. It seems Ancestry does NOT want to be bothered so they make it virtually impossible to get an answer to your problem.
Alonso Crehan: Tell you what: get thee hence to your local public library. That early in the history of Connecticut there are many published sources, books dating back to that time period. Several of my ancestors were from early 1600s in Connecticut and other New England states and were town clerks...while they served in office, every single person had records kept. There are books listing New Englanders who are descendants of British Royalty; books giving complete genealogies (at that time), and so on.I realize that some people insist upon official records; well, the town clerk did a better job of record-keeping than any modern-day system....Show more
Brice Greczkowski: This is the Story. William Billings, born 1629 in England died in Connecticut in 1712. Some say he married Mary Atherton, others claims ! Mary Atherton married someone else and he married another woman named Mary. It is also said that this WIlliam Billings is not the son of Richard Elder Billings. Others say he is. Both Richard and Mary have extensive families that have been traced back centuries. Others claim no one knows who his father was or anything about his wife and family. I was just curious on if anything on this has changed since the 90's?...Show more
Donald Caravalho: could you be a little more informative? try posting another question with more info like, what's the story? what's the family? and what's your actual problem?
Booker Moros: Each 'claim' you would need to verify and that is likely to be from Wills and parish records for those dates.....I see many trees which just say England and f they say that as a rule of thumb they are not/have not been researched or they would give you the town and county..it is difficult at that time to find out which county and you would need to d! o some blanket research...I would start blanket researching th! e surname on something like freebmd during civil registration ( links page of www.famiytimetine.webs.com) and the IGI and see what countries come up with that name then look at OPRs in those areas the website I gave you also has other resources to help with PRs ad BTs and also linked is archives.org who are scanning lots of English OPR and are free to search.........as far as 'changes' since the 90s the only changes if someone has researched and copied cite numbers of records which you can then check..English PRs generally go back to the early 1500s so it is possible to verify if you can find the county...Show more
Ariel Arons: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wdwrth/Bil...this discusses the known issues relating to a will, which allegedly named William Billings as son. The will does not exist. It gives the exact source of the claims of parentage. Welcome to genealogy. In some circles, especially persons in Colonial times, persons were working them in the late ! 1800s or early 1900s. Many of the New England genealogies have been PROVEN as false, or, based on records that were allegations...NOT based on valid records or interpretations of records. Some times..men with the same name were confused. Obviously, in those days, the concept of research was limited by inability to travel. Today, the issue is that an OLD BOOK is sometimes accepted, and people don't dig "further" to see that the book was disproved. Some of these old genealogies were based more in vanity than anything else. What you see today..is persons who accept research without knowing WHAT DOCUMENTARY standards are, and spread it online like a virus. In reality..this idea of using badly documented sources, is NOT NEW. It just spreads faster via the internet (and more persons who think a gedcom is an original source). As for wives, it is often difficult. Do you know how many women were named Mary in those days? Unless the woman's father left a will SPECIFICALLY stating "dau! ghter Mary, wife of William Billings", it can be murky. Her father migh! t not have named daughters in his will at all. Or, he died prior to her marriage....Show more
