Do I need optical dig cord plus HDMI?

Bell Pasco: TV has cable. Surround system and TV are both Samsung. I connected HDMI from surround system to cable box and then to TV--neither worked--no sound or picture. Samsung sd I also needed an optical cable to get sound, but it isnt mentioned in manual and defies the meaning of HDMI. Solution?

Sabra Roers: I don't understand your setup. Are you talking about DVD here or cable? Either way, HDMI should carry both video and audio to your TV. Is the Samsung you mention here your TV, your DVD player, your surround sound system?

Coleman Deliberato: If you are getting sound with the HDMI cable (which carries the video and audio signal) you do not need to hook up the optical cable. Your dvd should be connected directly to the tv and not the cable box. Cable box to the tv with HDMI cable if available, other wise use component for video and optical cable for the audio. Hope this will help you out.

Jed Porada: in the experience that your receiver helps aud! io with the help of HDMI then you might desire to connect HDMI from PS3 to receiver to appreciate DTS-HD MA or Dolby real HD sound from Blu-ray movies. or you utilize HDMI immediately from PS3 to television and optical from PS3 to receiver.
