What is the best way to go about gaining knowledge of car maintenance?

Emilie Santmyer: I began learning by fixing my own car and reading as much as possible when i was in my early teens. If i took something apart, i laid them out piece by piece the way i removed them and i reverse the reinstall with the new parts. best teacher is self taught, but taking a course helps it along too, take some basic repair course at a local community college a few nights per week. If you can get a p/t job as a helper in a garage, ask a lot of questions and learn the shortcuts from the "older guys". Work on cars with your friends who are knowledgeable and learn from them as you go along too. Life is the best experience for teaching. The other way is to pay a school to teach you for a lot of money, years worth of training and you gets the tools and job placement later after graduation. But you are looking at a long repayment of student loans.good luck.....Show more

Cassey Hollinghurst: Just do it, I guess. Call it 'trial and error' but most of us early o! n just found an old engine and started taking it apart. I find working in an auto parts store helps. I work at one of the major US chains, and I find while the work conditions and pay are poor, and the training is non existent, you do learn things as people come in and eventually return and tell you what works and what didn't.

Oswaldo Rayburn: It is amazing what can be learned on a Saturday morning watching allthe car shows and how-to series....Auto-Zone has a series of How-To DVD's on everything of how to convertyour A/C to r134A , to replacing a power steering pump.. at $7 bucks each they will be a valuable learning tool... also a project vehicle that you do not have to depend on as a daily driver so that you may tinker toyour hearts desire... good luck... welcome aboard....Show more
