Damion Oleksa: While the VHS camcorder in its day was great, modern cameras are far better in quality, also as you are going to be freelance your customers will require quality video. It does not have to be HD just good quality, so consumer cameras are out of the picture, you have to move up to at least prosumer, Depending on Who you sell the video to will decide what format you will have to use.If you are going to try TV companies then you will have to set your sights a lot higher, and forget the prosumer cameras, it has to be "professional grade" camera! s, loads of money. or they are unlikely to even look at your work. A good prosumer camcorder for your type of work would be a canon XL1s or XL2, you can get them second-hand for $500 and up, once you get into the professional cameras second-hand you are looking at $2000 for a reasonable one, much cheaper you may find that the camera is going to cost you more in repairs. Remember that just for the basic camera, there are other things you are going to need. which can add up to the same price or more than your cameragood luckRR...Show more

Ira Porietis: Get a modern digital camcorder and use with a shoulder stabilizer.Go to the Public Library and research old copies of Consumer Reports;their annual issue, small book, will tell you which monthly issues to read.Don't mess with the old VHS machines. Just the cost of a new battery will be too much. The rubber rollers inside are probably dried out and lubrication for bearings is dry too....Show more
