Where do you find car seat safety ratings? (please read)?

Coleman Senn: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm I looked at that and the seat you mention is there but those are ease of use-not safety ratings. Here are details from http://products.howstuffworks.com/cosco-scenera-co...Cosco Scenera Convertible Car Seat 22120Product Specs | Compare Prices Date Published: 2/21/07 This updated version of the Cosco Scenera Convertible Car Seat should be used as a rear-facing car seat for children 5 to 35 pounds, and can be used as a forward-facing car seat for children weighing 22 to 40 pounds. Cosco improves on the previous Scenera model by abandoning the car seat's overhead shield. The overhead shield, a large padded bar that swings down over a child's head, has been replaced by a five-point harness alone. This is an important improvement because overhead shields, while they meet minimum Federal safety standards, do not offer as much protection as a five-point harness and may actually harm a child during impact because the ! bar can cause a head or chest injury -- especially for children at the bottom of the weight and height chart. Thus, we were pleased to find the Cosco Scenera now sports a five-point harness. Fortunately, this car seat's designers updated another important feature: The previous model required one to rethread the harness to adjust the shoulder height. Now, there is an up-front adjustment that, with the push of a button, loosens or tightens the harness. Unfortunately, the harness slots and the car seat cover openings are not aligned. This makes it difficult to insert the harness through the slot (there are four) and the cover's matching opening, and makes it easy to either misalign the harness or delay adjusting it altogether. The Cosco Scenera Convertible Car Seat does not have an EPS foam liner for additional impact protection. The installation instructions are minimal and not very clear. Because of this, and the fact that a "winged" base seems to get in the way of tightening ! a vehicle's safety belts, the Cosco Scenera Convertible Car Se! at is difficult to install. The verdict? We like the addition of a five-point harness and up-front adjustment, but there's still plenty of room for improvement.Pros: Overhead shield makes way for five-point harness, up-front adjustmentCons: Hard to install, no EPS foamHere is a forum on car safety from other parents and safety technicians: http://www.car-safety.org/forums/showthread.php?t=...Hope that helps,PeaceCouplesCoach...Show more

Len Dalba: Wow, they don't make it easy to find this, do they? The only child seat ratings link I found on that webpage was ease of use, not safety. I found this:http://www.consumersearch.com/www/family/car-seats...but it's not all that great - the best I could find was consumer reports online, but of course you have to have a subscription......Show more

Letitia Bigelow: your best bet would probably from a us department of public safety website. i dont have one to give you. sry

Michal Semple: They actually don't publish s! afety ratings, as all seats in the US have to conform to the same safety standards. Some seats exceed those standards, but ALL must meet them, so technically, no seat is safer than any other seat. However, some seats have features making them easier to use which in turn makes them safer, or some seats last longer which could be said to make them safer as kids should stay in a seat as long as possible.A Cosco Scenera seat is a good choice (the one without the overhead shield!) becuase it will rear face to 35lbs. Babies should stay rear facing AS LONG AS POSSIBLE! Not just to 20lbs/1year. That is the bare minimum for turning a baby around and who wants to do the bare minimum for their kids? Their bones haven't ossified yet and break easier and they need the bracing a rear facing seat provides in a crash. The seat is usually easy to install in all cars, as well. Its definitely not the cushiest or anything, but it is definitely safe. Here's the gray area - its not AS safe as ! other seats, becuase it doesn't have any energy absorbing foam in it. ! The foam helps absorb the impact in a crash further protecting a child. So its safe, and many car seat techs actrually set aside their Britax seats briefly to use one of these b/c it rear faces to 35lbs and Britax rear faces to 33lbs....Show more
